Sustainability

At Connect Education Trust, we are fully committed to a more sustainable future and leaving the world in a better place for future generations. We are dedicated to protecting our planet and recognise that sustainability has to be a vital part of the Trust’s strategic plan and operations.

Our aim is to make sure that all pupils live and learn in a sustainable way. We have the responsibility and opportunity to make a difference in looking after our planet. Our collective choices and decisions can have a significant impact, as we prepare our children to create remarkable futures. Our aim is to deliver a viable approach to sustainability in our schools.

Connect has adopted the Bioregional “One Planet Living” principles as a framework to guide our thinking on sustainability. Together, the 10 elements comprise a holistic approach to sustainability.

Connect is taking direct action at Trust level as well as supporting our schools to develop their activities. For example, we are taking steps to measure, monitor and reduce our energy and water consumption. We are reporting on our energy usage and what we are doing to reduce this for the first time in our 2022/23 annual report, to be published in early 2024.

In 2023 we were proud to host our first Pupil Parliament Network meeting on sustainability. It is made up of 2 pupil representatives from each school across Connect Education Trust. The Parliament will meet once a term.

Pupil Parliament EcoPark House Visit - January 2025

During their visit to the Eco Park House, the pupils were given an enriching and hands-on opportunity to learn about the complex processes involved in waste management. They gained valuable insight into how waste is carefully sorted and processed, shedding light on the importance of responsible disposal and the environmental impact of our everyday choices. The experience reinforced key principles of sustainability—emphasising the crucial roles of recycling, reusing, and repairing items to reduce waste and conserve resources.

As they made their way to the observation deck, the pupils had the chance to watch firsthand the intricate process of sorting commonly fly-tipped materials. This not only demonstrated how waste is diverted from landfills but also highlighted the importance of vigilance in responsible waste disposal and the role that individuals and communities play in maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.

Throughout the visit, the pupils showed great enthusiasm and were deeply engaged, asking thoughtful and insightful questions that reflected their growing awareness of the challenges surrounding waste management and environmental protection. Their inquisitiveness and maturity in understanding these complex issues were a testament to their developing sense of responsibility towards the planet. The Eco Park House visit was a clear example of how educational experiences can cultivate environmentally conscious individuals who are equipped with the knowledge and drive to make a positive impact on the world around them.

This visit not only expanded their understanding but also showcased their commitment to sustainability, serving as a stepping stone in developing a generation of thoughtful, informed citizens dedicated to creating a more sustainable future.
